During my time at Duke, John’s leadership modeled the values I hope to bring to my career: kindness, curiosity, accountability, all with a sprinkling of irreverent humor. He was accepting of my bad humor, including dressing like him in clinic, encouraging of my interests in immunology and competitive running/swimming and was always there with an open door for any problems I had. As I start the transition into mentoring trainees myself, I hope to be the mentor to them that John was for me.
I would like to recognize Dr. van Oers as a mentor whose constant support and encouragement have been instrumental in my scientific journey. He believed in me as I transitioned from chromatin biology to immunology and fostered an environment where I never had to choose between family and ambitious science.
